Mercedes-Benz Axor

Overview

  • Economical, comfortable, safe and attractive

Of the many factors that determine how economical a truck is, payload is perhaps the most decisive. Especially when it comes to medium-distance haulage and heavyduty short radius distribution in the GVM category form 18 to 35 tons. The Axor was designed specifically for these tasks, so high payload is one of its fortes. It is already a very efficient truck with a durable, economical and powerful 6-cylinder engine plus a special powertrain configuration. With robust design and long service intervals, we have now also reduced the weight of the Axor wherever possible.

You are sure to find the right cab, as there are three on offer, including larger cabs for more space up front and smaller cabs for increased payload, depending on engine power and application in question. Drivers especially will be pleased about the mini revolution that has taken place in the interior: controls that are even easier to use and new bunks. After all, driver motivation is an important economic factor too.

  • Top-class results. On the road and on the balance sheet

    • Payload optimisation based on design solutions that reduce the vehicle’s unladen weight.
    • Low fuel consumption thanks to the Telligent® engine management system: with electronic engine management for the high-torque, 6-cylinder in-line engines with 6.3 or 12 litre capacity.
    • Maximum torque generated in the low-consumption engine speed range (1100 to 1600 rpm).
    • Cost-effective compliance with Euro 3 regulations.
    • Short downtimes thanks to a design concept based on ease of repair.
    • Reliability and durability based on exceptionally high operational performance.
  • A simple answer to the rigours of heavy-duty short-radius distribution – the Axor

It’s all about focussing on the essentials. Axor trucks used for medium-distance haulage and heavy-duty short-radius distribution offer just the right amount of room. All thanks to ergonomic design and optimum use of the available space, the aim being to make the driver’s job easier. Prominent aspects of the new cab generation include the flowing, rounded forms of the cockpit and instrument panel, more freedom of movement, extra stowage options and the fact that all the main controls are positioned within easy reach around the driver.

We also attached great importance to selecting easy-care materials that are pleasant to the touch and easy on the eye. In short, the new Axor cab is designed to provide the driver with an extremely comfortable working environment, resulting in improved driver productivity, safety and economy.

  • Safety – guaranteed

The Axor cab is an extremely safe construction that is designed to offer maximum protection, having successfully passed the strict European crash test ECE R29. Only flame-retardant, splinter-proof materials with rounded corners and edges are used in the interior. Not only that, but seat belts with belt tensioners are also standard. In addition, visibility has been improved in order to enhance safety. Fitted as standard, the new clearglass headlamps illuminate a wide area of the road, whilst heated exterior mirrors with manual control, wide-angle rear-view mirrors mounted below the main mirrors and the fact that each of the mirrors is offset outwards by 50mm combine to ensure excellent rear visibility. The new curved design of the mirror glass reduces the size of the blind spot. Finally, new wind defl ectors and corner panels divert the air to prevent dirt build-up on the door handles and the side windows.

  • Right from the first glance

The new Axor creates a powerful impression. The stylish front apron excludes quality with its streamlined contours and Mercedes-Benz star. It’s complimented by an egronomic interior with high-quality equipment and trim.

  • Axor Service

With the Axor, you recieve not just a vehicle but a complete service experience. We offer a range of tailored solutions covering everything from finance and insurance to 24 hour breakdown recovery.

Telligent Technology

  • Telligent® engine management system

The Telligent® engine management system is kept constantly up to date with all relevant engine data, including engine speed, load and temperature – in addition to other variables, such as air pressure and outside temperature. This enables it to calculate the correct fuel injection duration and timing for each cylinder according to the given situation every few milliseconds.

Regulating the engine in this way, the Telligent® engine management system ensures high output, low fuel consumption and low-emission combustion. In the unlikely event of a malfunction, this will be indicated in the display, allowing the driver to react accordingly.

  • The brake system

Lying at the heart of the Axor safety concept is an extremely powerful brake system fitted as standard. Axor trucks with an output of 260 kW /354 hp have a feature which enhances both economy and safety, namely the “Turbobrake” engine brake which improves the braking effect considerably when driving down steep hills. What’s more, this wear-free brake is around 85kg lighter than a conventional retarder. The Axor fitted with a 295kW/ 401hp engine comes standard with a Voith retarder instead of a Turbobrake.

The antilock braking system is a safety feature that prevents lock-up of the wheels during braking. The system is based on a dual-circuit brake system that is also equipped with an electronic control loop. The control unit of the brake electronics detects the current wheel speed via the pole wheels and wheel sensors. When braking, the system controls the brake pressure at the individual wheel brake cylinders via control valves. In the case of drastic braking and braking operations with locking wheels, the system automatically opens and closes the control valves of the wheel brake cylinders at very short intervals, thus preventing wheel lock-up and keeping the vehicle steerable.

Chassis

  • The robust frames

The Axor parallel frame design meets two fundamental design requirements: an extremely high load-bearing capacity and not a gram of surplus weight.

Numerous measures taken to reduce the unladen weight have made it possible to achieve the objective of combining a robust design with payload benefits. As a result, the parallel frame of the new Axor can handle much more than you might think.

The frame’s 50-mm hole pattern offers further advantages. It makes body attachment extremely simple, which means that bodies and add-on components such as extra fuel tanks can be fitted quickly and easily. It also eliminates the need to drill additional holes, which could damage the frame’s corrosion protection. The 50-mm hole pattern thus ensures that the outstanding protective seal produced by the cathodic dip priming process remains intact.

  • The vehicle suspension

No matter what the application scenario, with its suspension, the Axor meets the requirements of a flexible, state-of-the-art truck: excellent roll resistance and ride stability, precision roadholding, a comfortable ride and maximum traction.

  • The new 2-bellows air suspension

Another groundbreaking innovation for 4×2 and 6×2 semitrailer tractors with air-sprung rear axle: the two-bellows air suspension. Dispensing with the air bellows at the rear of the vehicle means that the shock absorbers can be positioned behind the axle. The result is extremely stable handling, outstanding driving dynamics and optimum roll characteristics.

  • The tried-and-tested stabiliser link

With air-sprung rear axles, the stabiliser link has a dual function: it is responsible both for axle location and stabilising body roll. In other words, it does the work of two control arms, two bearing brackets, two articulated rods and numerous mounting parts. The result is outstanding handling and a reduction in weight.

Cabs

  • For working … and for resting

If you want to work effectively, you need a workplace that makes the job as comfortable as possible. Somewhere that makes you feel at home. Axor cabs deliver both. With the L-cab and L-cab with high roof, the Axor is ideally equipped to handle the challenges of medium-distance distribution. The L-cab is fitted with the comfortable standard bed. The high roof variant offers a comfortable standing height, plenty of stowage space and is optionally available with a second (luxury) bed in the upper sleeping area. The S-cab or S-cab with rear-wall extension for the Axor are also carefully designed to deal with the vigours of every truck application and to meet all driver requirements.
For anyone who never or only occasionally needs to spend the night in the cab, the S-cab with rear-wall extension has the option of a folding bunk.

  • The L-cab with raised roof is exceptionally spacious and offers impressive standing room. The standard lower bed is 68.5 cm wide and can be teamed with a 70-cm wide luxury upper bed, available as an option. A luggage rack can be fitted in place of the upper bunk.

Cab Equipment

  • BM interface

The standardised ABH* interface makes it easy to establish connections without tiresome cable routing. Integrated centrally in the cab’s hatch, the interface vastly simplifies communication between vehicle and body. Simple connections make electrical systems more accessible and, at the same time, ensure a safe and fault-free link between cab and body. All in all, this saves time and money.

    Clear-lens headlamps

The standard-fitted clear-lens headlamps with integral indicators are appealing to the eye and significantly improve road illumination. Changing the bulbs is extremely simple too: just open up the headlamp, replace the bulb and there you have it.

    Light-alloy wheels

The light-alloy wheels not only look good – they also save weight and, therefore, increase the payload. Further lightweight elements, such as the aluminium fuel and compressed-air tanks, are available as an option.

    Wind deflectors

The A-pillar wind deflectors, the corner panelling and the exterior mirror fairings enhance safety in the new Axor. They redirect the flow of air away from the doors and side windows, reducing dirt build-up and ensuring optimum visibility. The wind deflectors also improve aerodynamics and help to reduce fuel consumption. And, last but not least, they give the new Axor an even more powerful appearance. After all, looking the part is also important.

    Xenon headlamps

Available as an option for all Axor trucks the high-performance xenon headlamps provide optimum road illumination and improve visibility in even the most difficult weather conditions.

    Mirrors

Safety plays a key role in the Axor. And since this includes good visibility in the area directly in front of the driver’s cab, the Axor is fitted as standard with a heated front mirror, which extends the driver’s field of vision. The generously dimensioned exterior rear-view mirrors offer a clear view to the rear. Equipped as standard with manually controlled electric heating, there is no danger of misting-up, icing over or of dirt particles being “burnt” into the mirror. The mirrors have been repositioned a further 50 mm out from the truck to give drivers an even better all-round view. And the use of convex mirrors helps to reduce the size of the blind spot. The wide-angle exterior mirrors attached to the bottom afford excellent visibility. The mirror design is rounded off by exterior mirror covers, which carefully direct the airflow away from the doors and side windows to keep them clean.

  • Long-distance cockpit

Forget the discomfort of lengthy journeys with the “Long-distance” cockpit. The extended instrument panel provides additional stowage space – something you can never have enough of. There’s space for everything a long-distance driver needs: from freight papers to pens and personal items. This cockpit is standard for all cabs.

    “Distribution” cockpit

Flexibility is the watchword in the “Distribution” cockpit. In particular the instrument panel and the recess below it are designed to allow easy through-cab access. An optional centre seat is also available. This cockpit is available as an option for all Axor models up to 240 kW (326 hp).

    “Luxury” cockpit

The “Luxury” cockpit offers even more stowage space thanks to the extended recess below the instrument panel. There is more than enough room for paperwork and other items that need to be close at hand. The use of soft surface materials lends the cab a particularly pleasant feel. The “Luxury” cockpit is available as an option for all cabs.

  • Stowage concept

The Axor stowage concept offers generous stowage options for personal items and technical equipment. There is more than enough room for the likes of a jacket or bag.

In all the cabs, DIN-sized recesses above the windscreen are able to house all of the equipment necessary to transform the Axor into a state-of-the-art communications centre: the new radio with Bluetooth hands-free system.

In the L-cab with raised roof, the stowage space above the windscreen is extended to include a generous stowage compartment with hinged cover and an open compartment.

    Beds

The beds which are available for the L-cabs really do deserve to be called just that – beds. The standard lower bed is 68.5 cm wide and features a single-section sprung mattress. High-roof L-cabs can be fitted with an optional upper comfort bed measuring 70 cm wide, which boasts a contour-adaptive slatted frame and a high-quality foam mattress. Movable support elements allow the slatted base to be adjusted to suit the occupant’s weight.

Drivers who have to change cabs can simply take their mattresses with them. After all, it’s always nice to sleep in your “own bed”. There are also three spacious stowage compartments under the standard bed. An optional refrigerator can be installed in the second of these compartments in Axor trucks with an output of 265 kW (360 hp) or above. And a luggage rack can be specified in place of the upper bed.

The control panel in the C-pillar of the L-cab allows drivers to operate the interior lighting from the comfort of their bed, as well as optionally the night heater and the alarm clock.

    Digital tachograph

The digital tachograph records all relevant data, such as the amount of time spent driving and at rest, road speed and rpm. This data is stored on the memory chip of the driver card and in the device’s memory from where they can be read electronically.

    Interior lighting

The interior lighting in the Axor features a number of illuminating details. The lighting in the driver’s area includes a bright reading light – ideal for checking freight documents, for example. Two additional lighting functions provide optimum illumination in the L-cab with high roof: a green night light supports relaxed, stress-free driving, and glare-free lights illuminate specific parts of the cab. It is the perfect setup for work, rest and recreation.

    Instrument cluster

All key vehicle data, including road speed, engine speed, fuel level and brake pressure, are clearly visible on the virtually glare-free instrument cluster. The integrated function check saves time by monitoring the most important vehicle data and functions and, with the exception of tyre checks, replacing the daily exterior inspections normally performed by the driver.

A graphics-capable display is included with selected equipment lines: the adaptive green rev counter helps the driver to save diesel. And error messages in text format and, if applicable, trailer data can be displayed (e.g. brake pad wear in percentage terms).

    Steering-wheel/drive and brake speed control

The easy-grip steering wheel adjusts to suit the driver rather than the other way round. The steering wheel features infinitely variable pneumatic adjustment, allowing it to be moved quickly, easily and precisely to match the driver’s preferred sitting position. The height can be adjusted by 70 mm, the reach by 11°, enabling the driver to get in and out of the cab easily. Acceleration and braking are combined in the combined cruise control unit, lending the Axor a pleasant driving sensation.

    Thermostatically-controlled heating/aircon

A pleasant climate helps to create that all-important feel-good factor and prevent lapses in concentration. The thermostatically-controlled heating system meets the very highest standards. It responds quickly, offers precision setting and reacts immediately to driver input.

Airflow is particular easy to control with the eyeball-type air vents. In summer weather, they can be used to blow fresh, cool air in the direction of the driver. In cooler conditions, the airflow can be directed onto the side windows to prevent misting, and the warm air emitted forms a “wall of heat” in front of the side window.

A hot-air auxiliary heater with two air outlets is available as an option. It is located beneath the foot of the bed and operates extremely quietly, creating the ideal environment during rest periods. The optional high-performance air-conditioning system is ideal in hotter weather conditions.

    Radio and telephony

You’ll always have powerful sound with the new radio generation, which is sure to delight all the HiFi fans. Along with the new optional radios with integral Bluetooth hands-free system to an integrated CD player. And the connection possibilities for an MP3 player and CD changer enable an almost unlimited musical enjoyment. The integral hands-free system uses Bluetooth wireless technology to access the entries on the SIM card of your compatible Bluetooth mobile telephone.

    Seats

The human body was not designed for sitting. All the more reason to make seats as comfortable as possible. Ergonomically optimised seats are vital for driver wellbeing, enabling the driver to concentrate on the job in hand. The Axor is fitted as standard with an air-sprung standard suspension seat with a whole range of adjustment options, allowing the driver to configure the ideal sitting position.

For even more comfort, the Axor offers an air-sprung luxury suspension seat with a design that fits the body perfectly. This is available as an option for the driver and co-driver. It also features an integral padded head restraint and numerous adjustment options, such as lumbar support and side-contour adjustment.

And like all the seats in the Axor, the luxury suspension seat boasts an attractive, contemporary fabric design.

Maximum seating comfort available as an option: the air-conditioned suspension seat with multi-stage ventilation dissipates unwanted seat warmth and eliminates moisture. The fans are carefully distributed so as to prevent any unpleasant draughts in the kidney or lower back area. The air-conditioned suspension seat also has a horizontal spring that compensates for the effects of pitch. Other plus points in terms of comfort: the height-adjustable seat belt, the detachable head restraint padding and the upholstered armrests. After all, everyday life is hard enough.

    Door module

The Axor features a host of ingenious design details. These include the door module with its scratch-resistant surfaces, comfortable armrest and 1.5-litre bottle holder in the lower section.

The door module also features a control panel. The user-friendly buttons allow the driver to operate a range of functions: adjusting the exterior mirrors on both sides and activating the mirror heaters, controls for operating the power windows on both sides and, as an option, the central locking system and extended central locking system are also located here. Remote control for the central locking system is also available as an option.

    Stability control

ESP® for trucks: Telligent® stability control* is available as an option for semitrailer tractors. It detects potential instabilities, such as skidding or swerving, and counteracts these where physically possible. This enhances safety for both the driver and the truck’s load. Systematic adjustment to engine torque, precisely metered tractor braking and control of the trailer brake system ensure that critical situations are avoided. The fact remains, however, that there is no substitute for a measured and anticipatory driving style.

    Brake System

The optional Telligent® brake system comprises a controlled dual-circuit brake system with 10 bar operating pressure, all-round air disc brakes, ABS, ASR, and the engine brake. This can be supplemented by a weight-optimised, powerful retarder (for Axor models from 210 kW (286 hp)). The Telligent® brake system relays each brake signal with lightning speed – far quicker than any mechanical system. It also allows brake power to be metered as sensitively as in a passenger car.

The integrated Brake Assist system immediately identifies a critical situation based on the speed of brake pedal application and responds instantly by deploying the maximum braking force.

The integrated retarder function is a particularly economical feature. Each time the service brake is applied, the engine brake (constantly-open throttle and brake valve) and, where fitted, the retarder* are incorporated in the braking process. This serves to minimise brake-pad wear.

The Telligent® brake system is also capable of automatically distributing the brake force between tractor and semitrailer more effectively and in accordance with the correct vehicle load. Brake-pad-wear equalisation ensures that the pads on each axle wear down at the same rate and can be replaced at the same time.

    Turbobrake

The optional additional turbobrake for models from 265 kW/360 hp upwards helps put more braking force on the road when needed. With a braking force of up to 450 kW, the system enhances safety, especially on mountainous roads. In addition it means weight savings of up to 80 kg compared to a retarder.
